Our Secret – A Poem

Asleep, as long as

you think you are not.

Forced, as long as

you think you are not.

Empty, as long as

you think you are not.

Distracted, for as long as

the choice is unseen.

Beaten , for as long as

the choice is unseen.

Forgotten, for as long as

the choice is unseen.

Wake, as fast as

you see the opportunity.

Show passion, as fast as

you see the opportunity.

Create, as fast as

you see the opportunity.

For your slumber is deep , but your rest is null.

For your impact is weak, and your legacy is null.

For your purpose is meek, and you sustainability is null…

…without love.

Complacency

Every day, we wake up.  What happens today?

We get out of bed, go to the bathroom, brush our teeth, get dressed, and head to work.  Every day.  Day in; day out.  What happens today?

We are trained from a very early age to get into a routine.  We are trained to believe that there are responsibilities we are required to take care of each day, and if we do not take care of these responsibilities, then there is something wrong with us.  We are abnormal, and that is bad.  We move mechanically from one place to the next without even a thought of what would happen if we didn’t.    What happens today?

I am a parent.  As a parent, I have passed on this training to each and every one of my daughters. “Don’t forget to brush your teeth!”  “Make sure you get to school on time!”  “Your grades are killing me, Kid.  Don’t you care about them?  WHY DON’T YOU CARE ABOUT THEM?”  “You hold that door for that lady.”  “Don’t talk back to me!  I make the rules; you follow them.”  And on, and on…  Why did I do that?  Was it for their own good?  So their teeth don’t rot out of their head?  So they can get into a good college? Because I don’t want to listen to their opinion?  And if I teach them to conform to this training, does it make them a “better” human being?  If I don’t teach them this training, will they be able to survive the standard environment our society has created?  Do I want them to?  If so, why?  What happens today?

Today, I’m going to work; the business environment.  “Think outside the box.” “Be a self-starter.”  Have you ever tried it?  Try it once.  No, I mean really.  Hopefully, you don’t get fired for not making quota.  What happens today?

Today, I’m going to get out of bed, walk outside on my balcony, and sing to my neighbors.  I love to sing, and I have the freedom to do so.  Have you ever tried it?  Try it once.  No, I mean really.  Hopefully, you won’t get slapped with a “disturbing the peace” violation.  What happens today?

Today, I’m going to stand out in my backyard.  I own my home, so I can do what I want on my property.  I think I’ll sunbathe in the nude.  I hate tan lines.  Have you ever tried it?  Try it once.  No, I mean really.  Hopefully, you don’t get sued for public indecency.  What happens today?

Today, I’m going to keep my youngest daughter home from school.  Yeah, she’s missed several days last semester, but her grades are good, and she’s good kid.  We’ll do something fun!  Have you ever tried it?  Try it once.  No, I mean really.  Hopefully, they don’t haul you to jail and take your children out of your home.  What happens today?

No.  Follow the rules.  Don’t talk back.  Don’t think for yourself.  Just do it because that’s what you’re supposed to do.  Be mechanical, be mechanical, be mechanical.  You are part of the machine.  You are a worker bee.  You are unique, just like everyone else.  Be complacent.  This is satisfying; I promise.  You don’t need to worry about anything else.  Just fit in.  Just fit in.  If you need to aspire to something greater, get the bigger house, the faster car, the prettier tits.  Just don’t stop feeding your ego.  What happens today?

Wake up.  Get up.  Go to the bathroom.  Brush your teeth.  Get dressed.  Go to work.

But today… What happens…today…?
